As a freshman at the University of Rhode Island in 1999 Tony won the outdoor
conference high jump to earn All-Conference honors. When his four years were
finished he was a two time New England and a six time Atlantic-10 Conference
champ in the high jump. He also excelled in the 100 and 200 meter dash, where he
has an indoor best of 22.10 and was voted MVP in an Atlantic-10 Conference
Championship meet.
Tony helped the team capture the 2001 Atlantic 10 Indoor
Track & Field Championship with three top-three finishes, which earned him
all-conference honors. He took first-place in the high jump (6'9.00"), second
in the 200-meter dash (22.48) and notched a third-place finish in the 55-meter
dash (6.57). He was able to do this despite standing only 5-9, the shortest NCAA
Division I high jumper on the East Coach during his college years. He belongs to
that small and elite group of high jumpers who have scaled seven feet.
