While representing Notre Dame HS Marina was the four-time CHSAA Outdoor
Champion in the Shot Put, three-time CHSAA Outdoor Champion in the Discus and
two-time CHSAA Outdoor Champion in the Hammer. Indoors she did as well taking
the Championship in CHSAA Indoor Shot Put three times. She had HS bests of
13.41m ( 44 feet) in the Shot Put and 36.89m (121-1) in the Discus and 39.02m in
the Hammer.
In 2003-4, while attending Manhattan College as a freshman Marina finished
first in the Weight Throw (15.28m) at the MAAC Indoor Track & Field
Championships. At the MAAC Indoor Championships she was both the Weight Throw
Champion (16.85m) and the Shot Put champion (13.46m). Later that year she won
the Outdoor MAAC Hammer Throw with a toss of 44.36m.
Skip ahead to her senior year when she recorded one of her best days at the
college level. Marina kept the women's hammer throw title at Manhattan as she
captured her second straight MAAC crown in the event. Her road to repeating was
not an easy one, but the senior dug deep and pulled out the title under
pressure. After fouling on her first two attempts in the preliminaries, she
found her way into the finals on her third attempt. Still trailing Rider's
Jazmine Fenlator, who was the field's top seed, with only two attempts
remaining, the pressure was mounting, but Liander rose to the occasion. On her
fifth attempt of the event, Liander produced the best throw of the day at
50.64m.166 feet,14 inches.
