In 1970 Joel became the first track and field coach at Susan Wagner HS. He
coached Wagner's first city champion team in any sport, in 1973, when Wagner won
the NYC PSAL Boys Cross Country Championship. His teams also won in '75 and '76.
During that same era his boys ran to a Staten Island record of 17:21.6 4 in the
4-Mile Relay. That record still stands today and ranks in the top 20 fastest
times in US HS history.
