While in New Dorp HS school Bill Jankunis was a many time city champion in the
high jump, and hurdles. By the time he graduated, he was the all-time best in
the high jump on Staten Island and in NYC. In 1974, representing the University
of Colorado, Bill finished fifth at the NCAA high jump. It was an upset when he
won the 1976 Olympic Trial, defeating the favorite for Olympic gold, Dwight
Stones. His personal best jump is 7-5 3/4.
